What is ROAS?
Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) measures how efficiently your advertising spend generates revenue. It's one of the most important metrics in performance marketing, telling you exactly how much revenue you earn for every pound invested in advertising.
Unlike broader metrics such as ROI, which account for all business costs, ROAS focuses specifically on the relationship between ad spend and the revenue those ads produce. This makes it the go-to metric for Google Ads, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads, and other paid channels.
We love using ROAS because we can set the timescale for measuring it, whether two weeks or two months, letting us measure performance over the short and long term. Knowing your ROAS lets you decide where to spend your marketing budget — if one campaign delivers a higher ROAS, you can shift budget towards it to maximise revenue.
Why ROAS Matters in 2026
In today's AI-driven advertising landscape, understanding your ROAS is more critical than ever. With rising ad costs across Google, Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn, every pound of ad spend needs to work harder. Here's why measuring ROAS with our calculator is crucial:
- Optimises marketing spend — ROAS shows which campaigns generate the most revenue so you can shift budget to the highest performers.
- Identifies poor-performing ads — A low ROAS signals underperforming campaigns that need pausing or optimisation.
- Tracks campaign profitability — ROAS gives you an objective measure of how lucrative your marketing activities truly are.
- Benchmarks future campaigns — Tracking ROAS over time lets you set meaningful goals for future marketing efforts.
- Maximises return on investment — Focusing budget on high-ROAS campaigns ensures your marketing spend is used wisely.
Whether you're running ecommerce campaigns, lead generation, or B2B marketing, ROAS is the metric that separates profitable advertising from wasted spend.

How to Calculate ROAS
The ROAS formula is straightforward:
Formula
ROAS = Revenue ÷ Ad Spend
Example: Your campaign brings in £10,000 in sales, and you spent £2,000 on ads. ROAS = £10,000 ÷ £2,000 = 5x (500%). For every £1 you put into ads, you get £5 back in revenue.
Our ROAS calculator takes this further with Advanced Mode, factoring in profit margins. If your profit margin is 25%, the calculator multiplies your ROAS by 0.25. So if your ROAS is 5x and your margin is 25%, your true ROI is 1.25x — giving you a far more accurate picture of actual profitability.
This is invaluable for ecommerce businesses where product costs, fulfilment and operational expenses significantly impact true profitability.
What is a Good ROAS?
At a basic level, a good ROAS is greater than 100% (1x). This means for every £1 spent on advertising, you're making back at least £1 in revenue. However, a 100% ROAS is merely breaking even — when you factor in overheads, it's not sustainable.
ROAS Benchmarks by Industry
Ecommerce
4x – 6x
Product margins vary significantly
Lead Generation
3x – 5x
Depends on close rate and deal value
SaaS / Subscriptions
6x – 10x+
Recurring revenue boosts lifetime value
Local Services
2x – 4x
Higher margins offset lower ROAS
B2B Marketing
5x – 8x
Long sales cycles but high deal values
DTC Brands
3x – 5x
Factor in COGS and fulfilment costs
Many of our clients see a ROAS of 500% or more. For example, an online fashion retailer achieved a 512% ROAS — earning £4,000 for every £781 spent — after we optimised underperforming campaigns. We recommend aiming for a ROAS of 2x to 3x in most industries, growing to 5x+ for software, subscriptions and high-value products.
How to Improve Your ROAS
If your ROAS isn't where it needs to be, here are proven strategies to improve it:
1. Reduce Ad Costs
Experiment with different bidding strategies, target lower ad positions (top positions cost more), and refine audience targeting so you're not wasting budget on irrelevant clicks. Thorough data tracking ensures you understand which keywords and audiences drive revenue.
2. Optimise Landing Pages
Ensure landing pages align with your ads. Conversion rate optimisation through faster load times, personalised messaging and compelling calls-to-action can dramatically improve your ROAS without increasing spend.
3. Increase Customer Lifetime Value
Use email marketing to nurture subscribers, implement remarketing campaigns to win back abandoned carts, and build loyalty programmes. Higher lifetime value means each customer acquired through ads delivers more revenue over time.
4. Leverage AI-Powered Optimisation
Modern platforms like Google's Performance Max and Meta's Advantage+ use AI to optimise bidding, targeting and creative in real time. Our AI marketing strategy ensures you're leveraging these tools effectively.
5. Refine Your Targeting
Better audience segmentation reduces wasted spend. Use lookalike audiences, first-party data, and retargeting to focus budget on users most likely to convert.
